This is a statue of Gandhi in Tavistock Square, where four years ago terrorists blew up a bus. Fifty-two people were killed that day, some on the bus and many more on the Underground.
Ironically, inside Tavistock Square is the Peace Park, where Gandhi sits contemplating over a field of marigolds. In another corner is a memorial stone to conscientious objectors to the First World War, next to a neglected rose garden.
Here's my post from that day, four years ago, when nobody knew anything except some bombs had gone off. I was worried about my friend, who was with me yesterday and remembered what she saw four years ago.
Today they are unveiling a memorial to the victims in Hyde Park. I hope they place a memorial in Tavistock Square, to remind people that violence never solves anything. Here's another post I wrote, a day after the bombings, saying just that.
And two days later, in London we laughed.
