The Roman Baths in Bath
The top level where the people are standing is the current street level. The lower level is the Roman ground level.
Emperor Hadrian
Hadrian ordered that men and women not bathe together, at least not naked. Good thing he isn't around to see the nude beaches in Wales.
The Temple of Sulis Minerva
The gorgon's head at the entrance to the temple, with snakes entwined in his beard.
This was only one of the baths. Many more are inside, including seperate men's and women's bathing areas. This would have been covered, as shown in the model below. The Victorians who discovered the Roman baths built the terrace around the baths.
The large dome, the tallest structure in Roman Britain, must have been impressive. It covered the pool in the photo above.
The Roman Baths museum also contains many Roman artifacts, including curses found in the sacred pool. It's worth a few hours of your time, if you find yourself in Bath.
