I don't know if you can see, but underneath the black cow there is a tiny white calf. When we walked through this pasture, with our dogs on leads, we saw several small calves, about the size of large dogs. This mom was very protective, standing over her baby until we left.
What are calves doing being born this time of year, you're wondering, and I am too. The ones in my pasture come around in the early spring. But last year, in this same field, I saw newborn calves in the fall.
This walk was our second walk around Chequers in two weeks. (The first was a pre-hike, which is where we learn our way around.) When we crossed in front of the estate, there were signs warning that trespassing on the property was a criminal offense, being as it's the home of the prime minister. But the tiny Yorkshire terrier on our walk didn't heed the sign, and went under the fence and herded a flock of sheep, chasing them almost to the house. His mom had to crawl under the fence and stalk him until he finally tired of the game.
Boy, did he have some stories to tell the other dogs.
I imagine the guards watching us on the cameras were laughing their asses off, at the sight of a tiny terrier herding sheep. The little guy was lucky he didn't get shot, or at the very least held without bail for 28 days, which is what they do with terrier suspects here.
