More reasons not to eat red meat, which contains the line: "The problems start when animals go to abattoirs with faeces on them." If this is not offputting to you, I wonder if you were properly toilet trained.
Oh, and here's one more reason: "A diet high in red meat appears to raise the risk of developing pancreatic cancer." (My daughter's friend's mom just died from pancreatic cancer, which is almost always incurable.)
We've also had a wee problem with Cadbury's chocolate, which recalled more than a million chocolate bars due to a minute chance of salmonella poisoning, caused by a leaky pipe.
There's currently a debate here on whether the government should give fish oil capsules to schoolchildren. George Monbiot says there simply isn't enough fish in the ocean to accomplish this, but there's a far better solution. I currently take DHA supplements, which are derived from algae. (Look for Neuromins on the label.) DHA is one of the omega-3 long chain fatty acids found in fish oil which is also found in high concentrations in the brain. You can also get a form of omega-3 from flax seeds, which are easily added to meals. (Ask me how!)
Continuing the anthropology theme: Did cooking food make us human? (Incidentally, a lot of vegans continue on the slippery slope to a raw food diet. I will never do that, as I do not like raw food, and now I know why. I am just too evolved.)
