I just listened to a one-year-later report on foxhunting, about people who've moved to Ireland to enjoy legal foxhunting. A giggly-voiced woman explained how she enjoyed the "sport" of hunting, the thrill of the dogs running, the wily fox using his wiles to dodge the dogs. She didn't mention the thrill of seeing the fox torn limb to limb by those dogs, did she?
I know most people don't share my abhorrence of any form of cruelty to animals, and I can usually respect those who don't on some other level—enough to get along, anyway.
But this woman enraged me.
There's a pro-hunting slogan painted on an overpass on the M1. Why these people haven't been served with an ASBO I don't know. But to hear them tell it, they're the ones persecuted here, because they aren't allowed to enjoy their "sport".
I've heard the same arguments used to defend cock fighting and dog fighting. Something tells me these pro-hunting toffs wouldn't like to be compared to the dregs of society who still defend cockfighting.
If you want to read more about my opinions on foxhunting, you can read one of my earlier posts, where I confront a petrol station attendant who thought I might sympathize with his opinions. (I've tangled with him since. Guess he got on my bad side.)
Good thing that woman in the interview has moved to Ireland. One fewer giggly toff here.
