National Security Agency mounted massive spy op on Baltimore peace group, documents show
This really disturbs me. First, I'm confused, because why is the NSA spying on peace activists? Us peace-activist types don't wish anyone harm, which is why we're peace-activist types in the first place, so why spend time and resources spying on such obviously harmless organizations?
Second, I'm worried: If they're so ignorant as to think peace activists are a threat, then do they even have a clue who the real threat is from? Do I need to tell them? Do any of them have, like, college degrees in threat assessment? Have they passed any kind of test, like the one postal employees take?
Third, while they're spending their limited resources spying on Quakers and vegans (and I can't even bring myself to step on an ant, much less harm a human) there are really bad people out there who actually do want to harm people. Are these people getting away with murder because the NSA is so interested in chasing down the license plates of Quakers?
And last, I'm really REALLY bothered by the underlying issues. It sounds a lot like NSA employees are getting off on spying on peace activists, using bomb sniffing dogs on their cars, simply because THEY CAN. That reminds me of bullies on the playground tormenting the children who are less equipped aggressively, while the teacher looks the other way. (In fact, while the teacher argues for their right to do so and funds their torment.)
As one of the signs the peace activists were discovered to have had says, "Those Who Exchange Freedom for Security Deserve Neither, Will Ultimately Lose Both".
