I'm wondering just what Democrats have to do to be exonerated of any involvement with Republican bad boy Jack Abramoff. The media has repeatedly tried to implicate Democrats in his dirty deals, though now some are reluctantly (!!!) admitting he never gave any money directly to Democrats. This is true. Anyone can check those facts.
But now the Talking Point du Jour is that Indian tribes, after hiring Abramoff to represent them, gave money to Democrats. Which they did. But they gave less after hiring Abramoff than they did before. Again, anyone can check these facts.
But they still gave some. Russert on Meet the Press thoughtfully provided a pie chart, which exposed the shocking truth that Democrats received about one third of the Indian money. Well, that's pretty bad, isn't is, ask Mom and Pop American. Not as bad, true, but still...a pox on both their houses!
I guess in order for the media—and then Mom and Pop—to conclude this is indeed a Republican scandal the Indian tribes would have had to have given nothing—zero—to Democrats in Congress. Even when those tribes are represented by Democrats such as Harry Reid of Nevada. In other words, if you're a Democrat, you can't accept any money from your constituents in case they may be looking for favors. Even cheap "Now 2/3 Off!" favors.
Is this the new Zero Tolerance standard the media is holding Washington to these days?
