Congressman Don Young and Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska vie for the nickname "King of Pork". Their excesses are well documented, but the worst are the two Bridges to Nowhere, one a $223 million boondoggle that would connect a population of 50 to a population of 8000, the other an even more expensive bridge connecting Anchorage to a handful of homes. (In honor of the congressman, it's to be named Don Young Way.) Both these bridges are pork at its porkiest. A bridge to bankruptcy, more like.
Another piece of Alaska's fishy pork: the half million dollar flying fish. (Go Cousin Jeff!)
Yet Alaska keeps voting for these guys. Why? Do they hate America? Do they hate the victims of Hurricane Katrina? Do they hate our grandchildren, who will be paying interest on those bridges for years to come?
I say we give Alaska one more chance. Either they vote these guys out in 2006 and 2008 or we boycott Alaska. I for one will not be planning any trips to Alaska until Don Young and Ted Stevens are history.
And I don't mean immortalized on bridges either.
