I was thinking about the good old days, when we'd go getting our knickers in a wad when Trent Lott said something nice about an old geezer at his birthday party, or when we'd hear the name Newt Gingrich and chuckle—that "Contract with America" thing sure was good for some laughs!
How little we knew of extremism then! Today's examples of rightwing lunacy are far worse—there's nothing laughable about justifying violence on judges. We can't afford to laugh, when these people control the House, the Senate, the Presidency, and most of the judiciary.
What I want to know is, will tomorrow's extremists be even worse than today's?
(Note: if DeLay and Cornyn were bloggers instead of members of Congress, TypePad would cancel their accounts, for advocating violence. I suggest the American people do the same thing.)
