"Me? I'm just playing ball with my human buddies."
A friend gave us a bag of apples from her tree the other day. (Our sad little apple tree was fruitless this year.) There were too many for us to eat, but that's not a problem around here. There's always a cow or two to partake of apple bounty.
But this calf was the only one who recognized the apple tossing going on and came to the fence right away. I haven't known calves to be particularly interested in apples. They usually just stare, wondering why we're lobbing missiles at them. But he gobbled every apple we tossed, then gazed at us begging for more.
"Hey, what's going on over there?"
His buddies eventually came over, wondering what he was up to, but he just looked all innocent. I think he told them he was just playing some ball with us, a cow-libi if I've ever heard one.
