Friday Calf Blogging
Playing hide-and-seek in the tall grass, the calves enjoy their last September.
The cows are back. I haven't said anything here, because frankly, I didn't want to speculate about where they'd gone, but for the last two months or so, the cows haven't been in the pasture behind our house. Normally, they come out in March or April, then spend the next eight months or so grazing in one of the three pastures. I'm used to watching fondly as the babies, young and frolicsome in the spring, older and more cumbersome in the fall, grow up to be big boys, still in love with their moms.
But this year they just disappeared around the middle of July. At first I figured they were in one of the other pastures, but when they didn't appear week after week, I got worried. Could a disease have wiped out the herd? Were they in quarantine for bovine TB?
I still don't have a clue, but they appear to be the same herd I saw back in the spring. The babies are bigger now, but they're still curious about the tall lady who peers over the brambles, calling them "pretty babies".
This one above reminds me a lot of Socks. I could fall in love in a heartbeat, but I know better now.
Winnies on the hoof.
