Friday Cow Blogging

Calves

It was dinnertime in the pasture the other evening, around 6 p.m. I noticed the calf in the foreground drinking mom's milk, then, after I'd snapped a few photos, I saw the calf in back, too, just having his dinner.

Sweet little things. I've written before about how attached the calves and their mothers are to each other. It must be hard on them when their children go away to college.

When the one in front pulled away, he had a milk mustache.

(Go check out The Ark for more Friday animals.)

How beautiful. I'm so glad those cows are enjoying their lives.

And how hard and sad it must be when calves are yanked from their mammas in factory farms and other meat farms.

Urbanvegan, these calves will be yanked from their moms in November, and we'll hear the mothers moo loudly and frantically, for days. It's really awful. Last time I swore I'd leave that week; it's so sad to hear!

The closest my mom ever came to "getting" (or at least 100% symptathizing with) veganism was when I showed her a photo of a mother cow looking at a downed or dead calf. She said, "you can't understand the pain in that picture unless you're a mom." And, she hasn't been buying milk since then and has switched to organic yogurt. Sigh. We'll see.

Oh, in regards to apple butter, I've never made any from scratch, but the best recipes seem to involve crockpots and loads of sugar. I think I'll give it a shot this year since apple season has come early to my life...
