A couple of weeks ago I discovered the BBC2 show Top Gear, which features three guys doing stupid things with cars. I had heard of it before, when one of the presenters was almost killed while trying to set a land speed record in a specially modified rocket car, but the fuss went over my head, as do most things involving British telly.
But the show is actually rather hilarious. (Note my use of British understatement combined with American hyperbole.) A continuing thread this season seems to be "watch us almost get killed!" perhaps in an attempt to increase their female viewership.
This week they go to Alabama where they all three almost get killed, this time by angry rednecks. As you would expect if you were to drive around in a Camaro with "Country and Western is Rubbish!" emblazoned on the side. But the pickup with Manlove Rules! should have been okay, don't you think?
And "I'm Bi!" could have been referring to the exhaust system on the Caddy, right?
It was all probably just a cultural misunderstanding. Sweet Home Alabama is actually one of the most welcoming states. (Don't let those bullet holes in the "Welcome to Alabama!" sign fool you. Most people keep their guns on safety there.)
You can see the adventures of these three plucky lads here. (This makes two posts in a row I have mentioned Top Gear. I must be some sort of crazed fan.)
