Laocoön

Laocoön

Lost for 1000 years, the statue of Laocoön and his sons was unearthed in 1506, paraded through the streets of Rome, and supposedly inspired Michaelangelo. It now rests in the Vatican Museum, but you may have seen a copy in Florence. Laocoön was a priest in Troy who tried to warn his people about Greeks bearing gifts, but was punished by the gods, who apparently were on the side of Greece.
